CHARM Africa

The Wits Centre for Journalism is one of seven African consortium partners of the Consortium on Human Rights and Media (CHARM), an organisation aimed at strengthening the effectiveness and building the resilience of journalists, media practitioners, social media producers, human rights defenders, and civil society activists and their organisations, to advance more democratic and free societies.

The members organisations are Defend Defenders (Uganda), Magamba Network (Zimbabwe), Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement or RFLD (West Africa), the Wits Centre for Journalism (South Africa), Fojo Media Institute (Sweden), Civil Rights Defenders (Sweden) and Civicus (Global).

The CHARM Africa program focuses its work on countries in sub-Saharan Africa where civil liberties are hampered. However, there are still spaces for expression, organisation and action, including pockets of resistance that can be supported to strengthen human rights and democratic freedoms.
