The Wits Centre for Journalism (WCJ), formerly Wits Journalism, is one of the leading journalism and media training institutions in Africa, with a history spanning more than two decades.

 Situated within the School of Literature, Language and Media (Faculty of Humanities) at Wits University in Johannesburg, the WCJ has become a leading provider of quality post-graduate teaching, thought leadership and practical engagement within the changing world of journalism, research and training. The Centre is a member of the Global Investigative Journalism Network.

Taco Kuiper Award for Investigative Journalism

The WCJ’s annual Taco Kuiper Award, celebrating its 20th edition in 2026, recognises outstanding examples of investigative reporting in South Africa that reveal untold stories, hold the powerful to account and question those in public life. Taco Kuiper was a highly successful South African publisher who left a significant part of his estate to the promotion of investigative journalism, administered and supported through The Valley Trust.

The African Investigative Journalism Conference

10-12 November 2026, Aga Khan University, Nairobi

The African Investigative Journalism Conference is the largest gathering of working journalists on the continent. Hosted by the Wits Centre for Journalism, AIJC is now in its 22nd year.
