Basic Business Reporting for Community Media 2019
Wits Journalism has designed a workshop to skill community radio workers in basic business reporting. It combines content sessions with practical ones at the Wits Radio Academy. The course is intended to develop a range of skills including writing, reporting, interviewing, editing and recording, as well as computer and Internet search skills. The bulk of the sessions will feature invited guests.
Topics will include personal finance, consumer issues, the language of finance including how to talk about numbers, an introduction to the main financial institutions, the story of money, municipal finance with a focus on how to find stories in the accounts, small business in the formal and informal sectors, with a look at the business of local media and how social enterprises are a potential business model for community media.
It will be held at Wits Journalism in Braamfontein over 12 weeks on Saturday mornings between 9.00 am and 1.00 pm, followed by a light lunch, from September 14 to November 30, 2019. Participation is free.
We will also be visiting the South African Reserve Bank and South African Mint as part of the course. This visit is scheduled for Friday November 8.
Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate of attendance.
