The Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill is open for public comment. The Bill aims to criminalise hate speech and makes provision for perpetrators to spend up to 10 years in prison. Hate crimes include various prejudices directed towards the victim based on, among many others, race, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion and HIV status.
The Bill comes after a year of highly publicized hate speech incidents that have been brought to light on social media. However many critics have questioned the limitations of the Bill and we unpack that on the show and discuss the Bill’s contribution towards South Africa’s democratic project with the Director of Democracy Works, Busi Dlamini.
