Socio Economic Research Institution has launched a damages claim worth R120 Million on behalf of 1652 informal traders.
Three years ago the City of Johannesburg and JMPD embarked on “Operation Clean Sweep” where they forcibly removed over 1 200 informal traders from the inner city. The traders were evicted despite having the required trading permits. They were assaulted and had their goods confiscated and damaged.
The Constitutional Court declared “Operation Clean Sweep” an illegal act of “humiliation and degradation” and directed the City to allow the traders to return to their places of business.

Informal Trading Officer, Mandla Mndebele from The Ecumenical Service for Socio-economic Transformation (ESSET) about the plight of informal traders. We also hear from informal traders about the unjust manner in which they have been treated by police over the years.
