As many South Africans continue to struggle against the rising cost of healthcare in our country, the regulatory landscape continues to change and evolve. It is proposed that the massive health-financing gap in our country will be confronted through the introduction of the National Health Insurance system. The proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) has been placed under heavy scrutiny by the South African public, most especially by the tax-paying community who are concerned about the possibility of tax increases to cover the costs of the system’s implementation.
We discuss and expand on the current discourse surrounding National Health Insurance with KPMG Senior Economist Lullu Krugel and Professor Shan Naidoo who is the Chief Specialist and Head of Department in Public Health at the Wits School of Public Health.
